Apple Adjusts Liquid Glass Transparency in iOS 26.2

Apple has released iOS 26.2, introducing another option for users who want to reduce the transparency of its Liquid Glass interface. With this update, iPhone users can now fine-tune the transparency of the Lock Screen clock, adding a new layer of control over the visual experience.

This change follows an earlier update that added a system-wide slider to manage the opacity of Liquid Glass elements. That adjustment came after users reported that the new visual style made their devices harder to read, particularly in everyday use.


What Is Liquid Glass?

First introduced with iOS 26, Liquid Glass is Apple’s latest design language across its devices. It transforms interface elements such as buttons, sliders, and notifications into semi-transparent components that refract light, giving them the appearance and optical qualities of glass.

The design was intended to modernise Apple’s operating systems and potentially lay the groundwork for future platforms, including AI-powered smart glasses.


Mixed Reactions Prompt Ongoing Changes

Despite its futuristic ambitions, Liquid Glass received a mixed reception. Some users found that the transparency reduced usability, making it difficult to read essential information such as notifications or the name of an artist in Apple Music.

In response, Apple introduced a Liquid Glass control in iOS 26.1 that allowed users to revert to a more “frosted” look if they preferred. With iOS 26.2, Apple continues this approach by adding a separate control for the Lock Screen clock’s “glassiness,” rather than making a universal design rollback.


Signals of a Flexible Design Strategy

These incremental changes suggest that Apple may not view the Liquid Glass overhaul as flawless in its original form. Instead of enforcing a single design vision, the company appears increasingly willing to adapt based on user feedback, offering more granular customisation options.


Design Leadership Changes at Apple

The timing of the update is also notable. Earlier this month, Apple confirmed that Alan Dye, the design executive who led the Liquid Glass makeover, was leaving the company for Meta. While there was no indication that Dye was forced out, Apple appointed longtime designer Stephen Lemay as his replacement.

Unlike Dye, Lemay’s background is rooted in interface and interaction design — expertise that may be particularly relevant as Apple works to refine and rebalance the Liquid Glass experience.


Additional Features Introduced in iOS 26.2

Beyond design adjustments, iOS 26.2 delivers several functional upgrades:

  • AirDrop codes now allow users to share files with people outside their contacts, making them a “known” AirDrop contact for 30 days — a useful option for work or short-term collaboration.

  • Reminders now supports alarms.

  • Apple News introduces a Following tab in the bottom navigation bar, along with other navigation updates.

  • Apple Music adds offline lyrics.

  • Podcasts gains AI-generated chapters, a Podcast Mention feature for linking to other shows, and additional enhancements.

  • Apple Watch users now receive a Sleep Score based on sleep quality and whether sleep goals were met.


Security Updates Across Apple’s Ecosystem

Alongside iOS 26.2, Apple also rolled out critical security updates for iPhones, iPads, Macs, Apple TVs, and Apple Watches. These patches address vulnerabilities that were reportedly exploited in an active hacking campaign, underscoring Apple’s continued focus on security across its product lineup.
