Doom Reforged: The Dark Ages Swaps Speed for Strategy in Gritty Franchise Shift
A New Era for a Gaming Legend
For over 30 years, Doom has been a pillar of the first-person shooter (FPS) genre. Since its debut in 1993, the franchise has carved out a reputation for relentless demon-slaying, over-the-top firepower, and pace-driven gameplay. The original Doom revolutionized gaming—not just through its chaotic violence, but by laying the groundwork for countless FPS successors.
Now, Doom: The Dark Ages arrives with a mission not just to continue that legacy, but to completely reshape it.
Back to Basics—With Brutal New Twists
In the franchise’s early days, mobility was rudimentary. Players couldn’t jump, and looking vertically wasn’t an option. Levels gave an illusion of 3D depth through clever level design rather than actual layered environments.
But with the soft reboot Doom (2016) and its high-octane sequel Doom Eternal (2020), mobility became central to gameplay. These entries introduced mechanics like double-jumping and dashing, rewarding aggression and agile movement. Players who mastered constant motion thrived in the demon-infested arenas.
The Dark Ages, however, takes a bold step in the opposite direction.
From Sci-Fi to Medieval Carnage
Abandoning the sleek, sci-fi aesthetics of its predecessors, The Dark Ages plunges players into a grim medieval setting. The familiar Doom Slayer now dons a fur-lined cape, brutal spiked armor, and a new arsenal designed for close-quarters combat. The game discards double jumps and dashes entirely, opting instead for slower, heavier movement and a more methodical combat system.
Id Software is positioning this title as a more grounded experience. The emphasis is on “raw power and slow, strategic melee combat,” a dramatic departure from the aerial acrobatics of Eternal.
Introducing the Shield Saw
Among the standout additions is the Shield Saw, a brutal hybrid weapon that plays a key role in the new combat system. Heavily featured in Id Software’s “Stand and Fight” trailers, the Shield Saw acts both as a defensive tool and a ranged melee weapon. It can absorb damage while sacrificing speed and can be hurled at enemies across distances, allowing players to close gaps previously managed through dashes and jumps.
Legacy Reinvented
By stripping away modern FPS staples and reintroducing limitations in service of deeper strategy, Doom: The Dark Ages challenges what fans have come to expect from the franchise. It leans into lore, medieval aesthetics, and methodical combat in a way no previous entry has attempted.
Whether this reinvention will resonate with long-time fans remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: Doom is once again evolving—and refusing to stand still.
