Allbirds Sells for $39M After Raising Nearly 10x That in Its IPO

Allbirds Sells for $39 Million After IPO Highs

Allbirds, the wool sneaker brand popular among Silicon Valley professionals, is selling all of its assets and intellectual property to American Exchange Group for $39 million. This price is roughly one-tenth of the $348 million the company raised during its 2021 IPO, and far below the $4 billion valuation it briefly reached on its first day of trading.

The agreement still requires shareholder approval and is expected to close in the second quarter, with proceeds distributed to stockholders in the third quarter. Following the announcement, Allbirds shares jumped 36% in after-hours trading. The stock had closed Monday at $2.98, giving the company a market cap of $24.5 million — meaning the $39 million sale actually represents a premium compared to recent trading levels.

Rapid Expansion Led to Struggles

Founded 11 years ago, Allbirds’ rise and fall has been widely covered. After its IPO, the company pursued aggressive expansion into physical retail and adjacent product lines such as leggings, jackets, and performance running shoes. These efforts, however, failed to resonate with its core customers, resulting in mounting losses.

Co-founder Tim Brown later acknowledged that the company’s rapid growth had compromised its identity, admitting the strategy had cost the company “some of our DNA.”

American Exchange Group: The New Owner

American Exchange Group, the acquiring firm, is a privately held brand management company with 18 years of experience in the sector. Its portfolio includes other well-known brands such as Aerosoles and Jonathan Adler.

With this acquisition, the company adds Allbirds to its roster, aiming to leverage its expertise in brand management to revive the once high-flying sneaker brand.
