Astro Bot Shines Bright at BAFTA Games Awards 2024, Scooping Five Top Honors
The British Academy Games Awards 2024 delivered a night of surprises and standout performances, with Astro Bot emerging as the undisputed star. The 3D platformer, built around the iconic PlayStation mascot, clinched five awards, including the coveted Best Game title.
A Night of Celebration for Sony
In addition to the highest accolade, Astro Bot also won Best Animation, Audio Achievement, Family Game, and Game Design, securing a stronghold across creative and technical categories.
Director Nicolas Doucet, while accepting the Best Game award, gave a heartfelt tribute to peers in the industry:
“To developers who had inspired others to join the industry.”
The awards underscore a significant moment for Sony, as its other 2024 release, Helldivers 2, was also recognized with two wins: Best Multiplayer and Music.
A Surprise Multiplayer Success
Helldivers 2, a squad-based shooter that exceeded expectations upon launch, struggled with server overload due to unexpected popularity.
Chief Creative Officer Johan Pilestedt of developer Arrowhead shared a touching story during his speech:
“Players had reached out to say Helldivers 2 had reconnected them with gamer friends from 10 to 15 years ago. That’s such an honour.”
Strong Showings from Indie Developers
Horror thriller Still Wakes the Deep, set on a 1970s Scottish oil rig, took home three trophies, including both Lead and Supporting Performance, and Best New IP.
The indie scene also made a major impression. Thank Goodness You’re Here!, a quirky comedy game from Yorkshire developers Will Todd and James Carbutt, won Best British Game. The story-driven title is set in the fictional northern town of Barnsworth and features performances from the creators and actor Matt Berry.
The creators encouraged aspiring developers in their acceptance remarks:
“We hope this inspires you to tell your own story in your own voice without compromise.”
A Nod to Newcomers
While many expected the poker-themed Balatro, made by solo developer LocalThunk, to edge out Astro Bot for Best Game, it still received notable recognition by winning Best Debut.
Actor Ben Starr accepted the award in-character as the game’s jester figure Jimbo, joking:
“LocalThunk is really rich now. Play more independent games… they are the lifeblood of this industry.”
Honoring a Legend: Yoko Shimomura
Legendary composer Yoko Shimomura, best known for her iconic work on the Kingdom Hearts series, received the prestigious BAFTA Fellowship.
Her emotional speech reflected on her creative struggles:
“The fact I am standing here at all is no thanks to my own efforts, but to the people who have supported me.”
“If the music I have made has resonated with one person and touched their hearts in one way, it was worth it.”
Games Beyond Entertainment
The Games Beyond Entertainment award went to actor and now-developer Abubakar Salim for Tales of Kenzera: Zau, a deeply personal title inspired by his father’s passing. Known for roles in Assassin’s Creed and House of the Dragon, Salim continues to break ground in storytelling and emotional depth in gaming.
Surprises and Snubs
Despite entering the ceremony with a leading 11 nominations, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II only walked away with a single award: Technical Achievement.
