“Boston Dynamics Integrates Google DeepMind Technology into Its Next-Generation Humanoid Robot”

Boston Dynamics Teams Up with Google DeepMind to Humanize Next-Gen Atlas Robot

Boston Dynamics has announced a strategic partnership with Google’s AI research lab, DeepMind, to accelerate development of its next-generation humanoid robot, Atlas, with the goal of making it more human-like in interactions. The collaboration was revealed on Monday during Hyundai’s press conference at CES 2026.

Carolina Parada, Senior Director of Robotics at DeepMind, confirmed that Atlas will serve as the first testbed for integrating Google DeepMind’s advanced AI foundation models.

“We’re looking to integrate our cutting-edge AI foundation models with Boston Dynamics’ new Atlas robots, and we’ll aim to develop the world’s most advanced robot foundation model to fulfill the promise of true general-purpose human needs,” Parada said onstage.


Gemini Robotics: AI That Learns Like Humans

The partnership comes less than a year after DeepMind introduced Gemini Robotics, AI models designed to enable robots to perceive, reason, use tools, and interact with humans. Built on the large-scale multimodal generative AI model Gemini, the robotics AI model was trained to generalize behavior across various robotic platforms, according to DeepMind.

Boston Dynamics, majority-owned by Hyundai Motor Group, brings its proven hardware to the table. The company already has operational products in over 40 countries, including the quadruped Spot, and its warehouse robot Stretch, which has handled more than 20 million boxes globally since its 2023 launch.


Atlas Moves from Prototype to Production

A prototype of Atlas demonstrated its mobility during the CES press conference. While impressive, Alberto Rodriguez, Director of Atlas Behavior at Boston Dynamics, emphasized that:

“Making Atlas into a product requires more than athletic performance for humanoids to really deliver on their promise. They have to be able to interact with people naturally.”

Recent advancements in AI are seen as a key enabler for achieving this goal, particularly in terms of safe, intuitive human-robot interaction.


Advanced Capabilities and Safety Features

The Atlas robot unveiled at CES 2026 is already in production and destined for Hyundai’s Savannah, Georgia factory. It boasts:

  • 56 degrees of freedom with rotation joints

  • Human-scale hands equipped with tactile sensors

  • Ability to lift up to 110 pounds and perform repetitive movements

  • 360-degree cameras for human-aware navigation

These features, combined with DeepMind’s AI, will allow Atlas to learn from experience rather than relying solely on pre-programmed tasks. Parada explained:

“Rather than having a set of predefined, loaded tasks onto the robot, we think robots should understand the physical world the same way we do. They should be able to learn from their experience. Should be able to generalize new situations and get better over time. So whether it is to assemble a new car part or to tie your shoelaces, robots should learn the same way we do from a handful of examples, and then get better very quickly with a little bit of practice.”


Scaling Up with Hyundai

Hyundai plans to integrate Atlas into its manufacturing operations later this year, aiming for deployment in tasks like parts sequencing by 2028. To support this, the company is launching a U.S. facility, the Robot Metaplant Application Center (RMAC), which will train robots to map movements such as lifts and turns. Data from RMAC will be combined with real-world production data from the Georgia factory to continually refine the robots’ performance.

Boston Dynamics and Hyundai’s combined hardware and AI capabilities mark a major step toward humanoid robots that can work safely and efficiently alongside humans, promising to transform industrial robotics in the coming years.
