Meta Tests Stand-Alone ‘Vibes’ App for AI-Generated Short Videos
Meta is taking a bold step in the AI-powered content space with its new stand-alone app, Vibes, aimed at creating and sharing AI-generated short-form videos. The company confirmed the development to TechCrunch on Thursday, signaling its intent to expand the app beyond its original home within Meta AI.
From Meta AI to a Stand-Alone Experience
Launched in September 2025, Vibes allows users to create AI-generated videos and explore a dedicated feed featuring content from other users. Think of it as TikTok or Instagram Reels, but every video is created using AI. Until now, this feed existed solely within the Meta AI app. By releasing Vibes as an independent app, Meta is positioning it as a more direct competitor to Sora, OpenAI’s AI video and social platform that arrived shortly after Vibes.
“Following the strong early traction of Vibes within Meta AI, we are testing a standalone app to build on that momentum,” Meta said in an emailed statement to TechCrunch. “We’ve seen that users are increasingly leaning into the format to create, discover, and share AI-generated video with friends. This standalone app provides a dedicated home for that experience, offering people a more focused and immersive environment. We will look to expand the app further based on what we learn from the community.”
The news was first reported by Platformer.
Growing Demand for AI Video Creation
Meta has not disclosed exact usage figures but indicated that Vibes has performed well, with Meta AI usage continuing to rise steadily since its launch. The company interprets this growth as a clear signal of demand for a dedicated, stand-alone experience.
While users can engage with AI content within Meta AI, Meta argues that an independent app allows for more focused video creation and engagement, enhancing both the user experience and the social interaction around AI videos.
Features That Encourage Creativity and Sharing
Vibes enables users to generate videos from scratch or remix existing content on their feed. Before publishing, creators can add visuals, layer in music, and adjust styles, then share their videos directly on the Vibes feed, via direct messages, or cross-post to Instagram and Facebook Stories and Reels.
Meta also reports that collaboration and sharing are increasing, with many Vibes videos being sent to friends—a pattern reminiscent of how users engage with Reels.
Monetization Plans: Freemium and Subscriptions
In a recent conversation with TechCrunch, Meta confirmed plans to explore premium subscriptions for AI features, including Vibes. Although the app has been free since launch, the company plans to implement a freemium model, allowing users to access basic video creation for free while offering subscriptions to unlock additional creative opportunities each month. These tests are expected to roll out in the coming months.
