Meta Unveils ‘Llama for Startups’ to Boost Adoption of Its Open AI Models

Meta is expanding its push into the generative AI arena with a new initiative aimed at encouraging early-stage startups to integrate its Llama AI models. The company’s latest move seeks to secure a stronger foothold in the increasingly competitive open-source AI market.


Llama for Startups: A New Opportunity for Emerging AI Companies

Meta has launched a dedicated program, Llama for Startups, designed to support small tech firms developing generative AI applications. The initiative offers select U.S.-based startups direct engagement with Meta’s Llama engineering team and, in some cases, financial assistance.

To qualify, companies must be incorporated in the United States, have raised less than $10 million in funding, employ at least one developer, and actively work on generative AI projects. The application deadline is May 30.

“Members may receive up to $6,000 per month for up to six months to help them offset the costs of building and enhancing their generative AI solutions,” Meta stated in a blog post. “Our experts will work closely with them to get started and explore advanced use cases of Llama that could benefit their startups.”


Battling for Dominance in the Open AI Ecosystem

The introduction of Llama for Startups comes at a pivotal moment for Meta as it vies for dominance in the open-source AI model sector. Meta’s Llama models have already surpassed one billion downloads — an impressive milestone — but the company faces mounting competition from other players such as DeepSeek, Google, and Alibaba’s Qwen.

Despite its momentum, Meta’s journey hasn’t been without turbulence. According to a recent Wall Street Journal report, the company has postponed the release of Llama 4 Behemoth, citing subpar performance on critical benchmarks.

In another controversy, Meta faced backlash over its submission to the LM Arena AI benchmark. Critics allege the company submitted an internally optimized version of Llama 4 Maverick, tailored for conversation, to achieve high scores, while a different variant was made publicly available.


Big Plans, Big Spending

Despite these hiccups, Meta’s ambitions for its AI division remain bold. The company previously forecasted that its generative AI tools could generate between $2 billion and $3 billion in revenue in 2025, and a staggering $460 billion to $1.4 trillion by 2035.

To support these ambitions, Meta has been investing heavily in infrastructure. The company’s generative AI (“GenAI”) budget exceeded $900 million in 2024, and is expected to surpass $1 billion this year. Additionally, Meta has earmarked $60 billion to $80 billion in capital expenditures for 2025, primarily to fund new data centers.


Monetizing Llama and Beyond

Beyond startup support, Meta is actively monetizing its Llama ecosystem. The company has revenue-sharing arrangements with cloud platforms that host its models and recently introduced an API allowing developers to tailor Llama to specific needs. CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed during Meta’s Q1 earnings call that the company’s AI assistant, Meta AI — powered by Llama — may eventually include ads and premium subscription features.
