Prada to Acquire Rival Versace in $1.36 Billion Deal, Creating Luxury Fashion Powerhouse
Prada and Versace: A Major Fashion Merger
In a groundbreaking move set to reshape the luxury fashion industry, Prada has confirmed its agreement to acquire Versace for an estimated $1.36 billion (£1.06 billion). The deal, which unites two of Italy’s most prestigious fashion houses, was announced on Thursday by the Prada Group.
The acquisition will significantly strengthen Prada’s position in the competitive luxury fashion market, enabling it to take on top-tier rivals like French conglomerates LVMH and Kering. Prada’s chairman, Patrizio Bertelli, expressed his enthusiasm about the merger, stating, “We aim to continue Versace’s legacy celebrating and re-interpreting its bold and timeless aesthetic.”
A Strong Portfolio for Prada Group
Prada, known for its high-end fashion and accessories, already owns several notable brands, including Miu Miu and the luxury footwear label Church’s. With the acquisition of Versace, Prada Group will now boast an even more powerful portfolio of luxury labels, reinforcing its status as a leading player in the global fashion industry.
Andrea Guerra, the CEO of Prada, emphasized the brand’s potential and long-term vision, saying, “Versace has huge potential. The journey will be long and will require disciplined execution and patience.” This ambitious statement underlines Prada’s strategy of gradual expansion and investment in premium brands.
A Strategic Move Amid Financial Challenges
The deal comes at a time when Versace has faced financial struggles, largely due to a broader slowdown in the demand for luxury fashion. Capri Holdings, the parent company of Versace, acquired the brand in 2018 for $2.15 billion, but the luxury brand has been operating at a loss in recent years. The $1.36 billion price tag for the acquisition is notably lower than the original purchase price, reflecting the current challenges facing the brand.
Alongside Versace, Capri Holdings also owns high-end fashion brands such as Jimmy Choo and Michael Kors. While Versace has faced difficulties, the brand is still seen as a valuable asset in the luxury market, with strong potential for recovery under new ownership.
Changes at Versace: Leadership Transition
March also saw a major shift at Versace with the departure of Donatella Versace from her long-standing role as creative director. Having led the brand for nearly 30 years, Donatella took over the creative reins in 1997 following the tragic murder of her brother, Gianni Versace. The 69-year-old designer will remain with the brand as chief brand ambassador, but the creative direction will now be handled by Dario Vitale, former design and image director at Miu Miu.
This leadership change marks a new era for the iconic brand, with Vitale poised to usher in a fresh creative vision for Versace’s collections.
What’s Next for Prada and Versace?
As Prada and Versace join forces, all eyes will be on how this new luxury group will evolve. With a rich history and a bold vision for the future, Prada Group is ready to leverage its latest acquisition to build on Versace’s legendary status in fashion. However, the road ahead will require careful execution to meet the high expectations of the luxury market.
