Projected 2025 Revenue for AI Companion Apps Expected to Hit $120 Million

Rising Demand for AI Companion Apps Beyond the Big Names

The market for AI “companion” applications is seeing rapid growth in 2025, particularly among smaller developers competing alongside industry leaders like ChatGPT and Grok. According to fresh data from app intelligence firm Appfigures, there are currently 337 active and revenue-generating AI companion apps worldwide, with 128 of them launched in 2025 alone.

This niche within the mobile AI sector has already generated $82 million in the first half of the year and is projected to exceed $120 million by year-end.

What Makes AI Companion Apps Different

Unlike general-purpose chatbots, AI companion apps are designed to simulate emotional connection. They allow users to interact with characters such as “friends, lovers, girlfriends or boyfriends, fantasy characters, and more,” as described by Appfigures. These characters can be pre-built or entirely user-generated, each crafted to convey a unique personality.

Some of the leading titles in this category include Replika, Character.AI, PolyBuzz, and Chai.

A Surge in Downloads and Spending

The numbers point to a strong upward trend. By July 2025, AI companion apps on the Apple App Store and Google Play had been downloaded 220 million times globally. Downloads in the first half of 2025 rose 88% year-over-year, hitting 60 million.

Appfigures also reports that total consumer spending on these apps reached $221 million by July 2025 — a 64% increase compared to the same period in 2024.

Notably, the top 10% of these apps account for 89% of all revenue, and 33 apps have surpassed $1 million in lifetime consumer spending. The revenue per download has also jumped from $0.52 in 2024 to $1.18 so far in 2025.

Big Players Move into the Space

While smaller companies dominate the AI companion niche, major players are also making their mark. In July 2025, xAI’s Grok introduced new AI companions, including an anime girl, an anime guy, and a “snarky 3D fox.”

OpenAI also drew attention when the release of GPT-5 led some users to express nostalgia for older models, mourning the loss of AI companions they had grown attached to. Responding to user feedback, CEO Sam Altman temporarily reinstated the GPT-4o model.

Even Google has tapped into this market, hiring Character.AI founder Noam Shazeer in 2024, while the Character.AI app itself continues to attract tens of millions of monthly active users.

Most Popular Themes in AI Companionship

Data from Appfigures reveals a particularly strong interest in virtual romance. Of all active AI companion apps, 17% include “girlfriend” in their name, compared to 4% that use “boyfriend” or “fantasy.” Other keywords, such as “anime,” “soulmate,” and “lover,” appear far less frequently.

The analysis also notes that many AI companion apps launched since 2022 were later removed from app stores due to low traction in downloads or revenue, and these were excluded from the report.
