Rocket Lab Lands Its Largest-Ever Government Deal
Rocket Lab has clinched its biggest contract to date, securing an $816 million agreement with the U.S. Space Development Agency (SDA), marking a major milestone as the company continues to broaden its footprint beyond launch services.
The latest win reinforces Rocket Lab’s transformation from a pure-play launch provider into a diversified space systems and defense technology company, with growing exposure to long-term government programs.
SDA Awards Prime Contract for Advanced Satellite Systems
In an announcement made on Friday, Rocket Lab confirmed that its subsidiary, Rocket Lab USA, had been selected as a prime contractor by the Space Development Agency. Under the agreement, the company will design and manufacture 18 satellites for the agency’s Tracking Layer Tranche 3 program.
These spacecraft will be fitted with advanced missile warning, tracking and defense sensors, supporting the SDA’s mission to strengthen space-based national security capabilities.
Separate Program Builds on Existing SDA Partnership
The newly announced contract is separate from Rocket Lab’s earlier $515 million award, which involves delivering satellites for the SDA’s Transport Layer-Beta Tranche 2 program.
That initiative focuses on creating a low Earth orbit satellite communications network capable of transmitting encrypted, low-latency data to U.S. military forces — a critical requirement for modern defense operations.
Total SDA Contracts Now Exceed $1.3 Billion
With both programs combined, Rocket Lab’s contracts with the Space Development Agency now exceed $1.3 billion in value, underscoring the company’s rising profile within the U.S. defense and space infrastructure ecosystem.
The scale of these agreements also highlights the growing role of commercial space companies in delivering national security capabilities traditionally handled by legacy defense contractors.
Eyeing Larger Department of Defense Opportunities
Rocket Lab has steadily expanded its defense-focused activities and has recently indicated plans to bid for multibillion-dollar U.S. Department of Defense initiatives, including the proposed Golden Dome missile defense program.
As defense spending increasingly shifts toward space-based systems, Rocket Lab’s expanding satellite manufacturing and mission capabilities position it as a key contender in future government-led space programs.
