During this beautiful time of the year, what we see mostly out there are the good things; the joy, cheering, festivities, perfect decor, perfect food, etc;
But there is another side that comes along for some more than the others, OVERWHELM which can leave us feeling not so good about ourselves. And if you are going through grief, anxiety this could be even more challenging.
We are already busy, stretched, and maybe dealing with some challenging stuff. So this time, whilst it is the most beautiful, add more to the task list, sometimes to the pressure of doing it all. And, if you are like me, highly sensitive, then overwhelm can really take over!
But, it does not have to be like this. So, what can we do, to celebrate Christmas in a way that feels right for us and truly brings us joy?
- You can say no politely, you are in control. It is ok to say NO. If your schedule is full and you have enough, you dont need to say yes to an activity for the sake of it. Ask yourself, do I really want to be there or do this? Does it bring me joy, is it meaningful?
- It does not have to be perfect. You do not have to host the perfect meal. You do not have to have the perfect dress, shoes, hairstyle. Lets have fun without the need to be perfect! I know it can be easier said than done, as I have to keep practising this!
- Focus on the true meaning of Christmas. The more we understand what Christmas is really about for us then everything else becomes secondary and the pressure releases.
- You do not need to overspend and drain yourself financially. Generosity lies in present, attention and connection.
- Of course, carve out mindful little pauses. I am sharing here 3 minute breathing space that you can practice anytime and hey its only 3 minutes. https://tr.ee/soLSIdrJfr And well if 3 minutes is a lot, 1 minute of slow gentle breathes, for example, breathe in to the count of 4, hold, breathe out to the count of 6.
- Do something that brings you back to yourself; a walk, dance, a mindful movement practice, journal, be in nature do something creative, or just have a cuppa in stillness doing nothing … you know what works for you.
May the Christmas spirit be with you. May it reminds you of the light within.
