Christmas Overwhelm and 5 tips to reduce it!

During this beautiful time of the year, what we see mostly out there are the good things; the joy, cheering, festivities, perfect decor, perfect food, etc;

But there is another side that comes along for some more than the others, OVERWHELM which can leave us feeling not so good about ourselves. And if you are going through grief, anxiety this could be even more challenging.

We are already busy, stretched, and maybe dealing with some challenging stuff. So this time, whilst it is the most beautiful, add more to the task list, sometimes to the pressure of doing it all. And, if you are like me, highly sensitive, then overwhelm can really take over!

But, it does not have to be like this. So, what can we do, to celebrate Christmas in a way that feels right for us and truly brings us joy?

  • You can say no politely, you are in control. It is ok to say NO.  If your schedule is full and you have enough, you dont need to say yes to an activity for the sake of it. Ask yourself, do I really want to be there or do this? Does it bring me joy, is it meaningful?
  • It does not have to be perfect. You do not have to host the perfect meal. You do not have to have the perfect dress, shoes, hairstyle. Lets have fun without the need to be perfect! I know it can be easier said than done, as I have to keep practising this!
  • Focus on the true meaning of Christmas. The more we understand what Christmas is really about for us then everything else becomes secondary and the pressure releases.
  • You do not need to overspend and drain yourself financially. Generosity lies in present, attention and connection.
  • Of course, carve out mindful little pauses. I am sharing here 3 minute breathing space that you can practice anytime and hey its only 3 minutes. https://tr.ee/soLSIdrJfr And well if 3 minutes is a lot, 1 minute of slow gentle breathes, for example, breathe in to the count of 4, hold, breathe out to the count of 6.
  • Do something that brings you back to yourself; a walk, dance, a mindful movement practice, journal, be in nature do something creative, or just have a cuppa in stillness doing nothing … you know what works for you.

May the Christmas spirit be with you. May it reminds you of the light within.

I am Catherine, an Award Winning and Certified Life Coach, Mindfulness Teacher (Adults and Children), Master NLP Practitioner, Accredited EFT Practitioner, and Chakradance™ Facilitator. And most importantly a mum. I specialise in supporting children and parents in transforming the stress and overwhelm of growing up into more calm, focus and confidence that will bring more joy to the family. . I am passionate about raising emotionally empowered children, with a positive and growth mindset so that they feel confident to reach their full potential as they grow up. Being a mum of a young daughter and having myself had adverse childhood experiences that led me to experience low self esteem and an eating disorder, I understand how important it is to raise mentally and emotionally healthy children. This is why, I also support also parents in the most important and possibly most challenging ''job" they will ever have. Mindfulness (including creative mindfulness) is a very effective way to support. Having had a previous corporate career of 20 years, being highly sensitive and my healing journey from an eating disorder gave me the realisation that there is no success until we bring more balance, more self awareness, self care and self acceptance in our own life. This is why, I support and specialise in supporting High Achievers in bringing more self awareness, emotional empowerment, and self acceptance in their life. I work with professionals through group mindfulness course, 1-1 coaching and mentoring, to release stress and overwhelm due to self doubt and low self esteem so that they can be more successful and happier. I have delivered mindfulness workshops / courses to university students, schools, and in corporate settings. I am the author of the e-book “Becoming You ~ A self-guided journey into clarity, awareness and meaningful change”. This book through it's 5 pillars of reflection offers an insightful journey into self. It is a gentle, self paced way of exploring meaningful change. It can be a meaningful first step.
